What does the literature/evidence show about what types of messages seem to be most effective?

The most effective messages were in the 1980s when commercial, posters, and the media displayed the images of people with full-blown HIV/AIDS. Presently, there is too much censorship and the realities of HIV/AIDS are concealed from the public eye. This in turn creates a false sense of security. Literature and evidence shows that the combination of behavior interventions, including school-based programs, peer-to-peer interventions, strategies that limit needle sharing, strategies that use parent-to-child communication, client-centered counseling, and personalized risk-reduction strategies, are effective in promoting behaviors that were protective against HIV/AIDS.
