What has worked in the past in the Gay community in the United States? |
||
Programs that target specific groups (gay community, drug users, women, children, sex workers) have shown to be effective with the battle against HIV/AIDS. There was very little censorship, they told it like it was and people (especially young gay men) saw the grim realities as a part of the gay community. HIV prevention programs and activities for gay men addressed: 1. Information about HIV and why unprotected anal sex is risky 2. Information where to get and how to get appropriate condoms and lubricants especially health and community-based sources. 3. Reminders that there is a choice, enhancing confidence and inter-personal skills, negotiating confidently with sexual partners on sex, HIV, and the use of condoms. 4. Information and access to HIV testing and counseling. 5. Realistic messages in appropriate settings and situations that are conducive to high risk behavior (clubs, bars, bath houses, parties) |
